Tbf, I expected iKON But You levels of synth, but it was good nonetheless. I wasn't feeling Sparkling with the MV trailers, but what a bop it was! Not as synth-heavy as I expected. Sparkling belongs to the upper echelon of songs released this summer. I don't know if this tops Querencia, but having played through the whole album without skipping a track (sorry Side D) and not feeling the album teaser, it's better than what I expected. The title encapsulates the general sentiment of this body of work. Bare & Rare is another step forward in her career. And yeah she's involved in writing all the songs so she really means it! I feel like the call out to haters, despite being uttered in airy whispers, is dripping in acid, and I'd be more afraid of this Chungha in her joggers in than the leather-clad bad bitch persona she affected in Bicycle. I feel like this album is a response to the criticism Querencia received hence this being part 1 of a bigger project, more sonic cohesion with a lot of it revisiting sounds she's done before, this time around with more bite, less fucks given, but it feels more real this time. It's committing to a sound and seeing how far she can go with it. And with Bare & Rare it feels like an exploration of pop palettes. It wasn't exactly what I wanted, but it was getting there. That's why Querencia clicked for me because the 'checklist' was expanded on over a few songs, giving each idea to breathe. I know it's a necessary step in a soloist's career but by Snapping I was tired of the genre-hopping and just wanted a good album rather than a collection of songs. I always thought her mini albums was made with a checklist of genres to include (for variety, to round out her sound) instead of creating a good listening experience. I know more people like her pre-Querencia work more, but that wasn't true for me. Nuh-uh - What was that? Thankfully we're breaking from the pattern of ending records with a ballad. BANJJAK BANJJAK korean korean California heat!! I want to hear this with a full band!!!Ĭalifornia Dream - I loved this ever since the Waterbomb perfomance. The bratty sound is new.Ĭrazy Like You - I was afraid this was gonna be a Dangerous Woman imitation but thankfully the closest it comes to that is on the chorus. There's only a few of these in her discography. Louder - The light, bouncy feel reminds me a lot of Young in Love. Chronologically, it comes after Killing Me and the progression of emotions, it's logical. XXXX - As usual with Chungha's albums, we open with a performance piece! Probably her moodiest song ever? A Reputation era song lmao. Nuh-Uh: Wtf I was wondering where it was going and that was not what I expected. How am I singing along 1 minute into my first listen already? Such a bop. Love Me Out Loud: Didn't go as club-y as I expected it after the pre-chorus. The last repetition of the chorus was just what I needed from it Why am I getting emotional without understanding the lyrics? Really really good ballad. Good Night My Princess: It sounds beautiful and to know it is about a childhood event of hers. I wish they would've placed it closer to Sparkling though because it's a similar fun summer mood It's like it grew into its sound idkĬalifornia Dream: I already knew I'd LOVE this after she performed it at waterbomb. I like the later half more than the first half. Watch me become addicted to it by tomorrow.Ĭrazy like you: Pretty much what I expected from a Bibi collab aka a bop. Louder: the beginning is so different from what I expect from Chungha. She delivered what I was missing from a lot of summer cbs this year Sparkling: it's the kind of summer bop that just feels so fresh. XXXX: w o w I was blown away already and then suddenly rapper Chungha appeared.
